IMPORTANT NOTICEWe do
not accept firearms into our stock or storage if the
white licence has expired.
- Transfer of ownership can only be processed while the licence is still valid or within 90 days before the expiry date.
- If the licence has expired, the firearm must be handed in to your local police station.
- Payment for a firearm will only be made once the firearm has been successfully transferred into our dealer stock, depending on the sale.
- Licences issued in an ID book or Green Card are accepted, as they fall under the previous Act.
- Before a firearm can be signed over, we are required to contact CFR to confirm the licence expiry date.
THE FIREARMS CONTROL ACT, 2000
(Act No. 60 of 2000)The Firearms Control Act aims to ensure that any person who possesses a firearm is
competent and legally compliant.
RENEWAL & COMPETENCY PROCESS1. Complete Accredited TrainingYou must successfully complete the prescribed test at an
accredited training provider to demonstrate your knowledge of the Firearms Control Act.
Once you receive your
training certificate from an accredited training provider or the
Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASSETA), you may apply to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for a
Competency Certificate.
2. Visit Your Local Police Station (DFO)Take the following documents with you to the
Designated Firearms Officer (DFO) at the police station nearest to where you reside:
- Your official South African identity document
- The original firearm licence, permit, or authorisation for the firearm you wish to renew
- Your training certificate from an accredited training provider
- Your competency certificate (if already issued)
- Four (4) unobscured, passport-size colour photographs
- Not older than three months
- Two photos for the firearm licence
- Two photos for the competency application
3. Complete the Required Application FormsYou will be required to complete the following SAPS forms:
- SAPS 517 – Application for a Competency Certificate
- SAPS 517(e) – Application for Renewal of a Firearm Licence
4. Fingerprints & Payment- The DFO will take a full set of fingerprints for the competency application.
- You will receive a SAPS 523(a) remittance advice and be directed to the police station’s financial office to make payment.
Applicable fees:- R70.00 for the Competency Certificate
- R70.00 for each firearm licence renewal
Payment method:- Cash or bank-guaranteed cheque only
You will receive a
Z263 receipt as proof of payment. This receipt must be submitted to the DFO for processing to continue.
5. Proof of SubmissionOnce your application has been submitted, you will receive a
signed acknowledgement of receipt as proof that your firearm licence renewal application has been lodged.
